Presumably they were aiming for an apostrophe.
Good thinking Dave, I think you might be right, although I rarely see it with one nowadays.
Thing is, I'm enough of a pedant to think maybe "for goodness's sake" would be the truly accurate way of putting it (disregarding entirely how ungainly a mouthful that would be).
