Steps 1, 2 and 3
Three steps to a completed cartoon strip. My sketchbook shows I had originally intended Quentin to be in on the joke from the start but by the bottom of the right hand page I was nearer the end result. At one point it looks like I was considering this to be a sunday strip (top right).
Stage 2 is the pencil rough as sent to King Features for approval.
Stage 3. The finished item.

THAT'S a rough? What are you insane, man? My roughs are barely legible and often annotated by me with comments like "if I drew this up, it would actually look like a tiger"....
Ha Ha! I know I know but the more work I put into the rough the quicker and easier the final artwork becomes. This'll change over time I'm sure.
I'd love to see one of your roughs.
Your roughs are nicer looking than my finals. And your colors are, as always, just lovely.
Yeah, I do annotated stick figures, and include always include an apologetic note.
Richard, I would LOVE to draw like you. Quentin Blake is another favorite. But both your styles are polar opposites to mine. I'm far too 'OCD'. I just have to be neat and tidy in my work. (That said, I'm actually quite scruffy in appearance).
